Photos 5, 13, & 18 are all of the home of Dr. Elijah Filmore Bingham and his wife, Cordelia Love Bingham. It is located in Amantha in the Cove Creek community. If you turn left on Henson’s Branch Rd. just past Henson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, it is just across the bridge. It still stands and is a privately owned home.
Photos 8 & 15 are of the home of former Watauga County Sheriff David Franklin Baird and his family. The home still stands on Highway 194 in Valle Crucis near the original Mast Store. It was last occupied by Sheriff Baird’s grandchildren, Frank & Wilma Baird, who were unmarried siblings. After their deaths, the home was inherited by their Mast cousins. The home is presently unoccupied. The property’s barn was formerly home to Dutch Creek Trails where patrons could rent horses to ride.

Photo number 8 is said to be one of the Mast children’s home. It’s located on Watauga River Rd heading north from Valle Crucis.

I don’t think the Elijah Bingham house is still standing. It was in ruins the last time I saw it in the 80’s. He was my Great Grandfather. If I am wrong please advise. The brick house that was built afterwards is still there about 100 yards from where their house was standing. Mary Lee and Ned Glenn lived in it after the others left the area. I am not sure who is in it now.

I stand corrected by my sister. The house in the picture is Elijah’s. His unmarried daughter, Edna lived in it after he passed. Not sure what happened to it after. The house I am thinking of was his son’s, Dr. William Otto Bingham. It was in Sugar Grove.

Hi Suzy. The home you are referring to – the one beside Ned and Mary Lee Glenn’s brick home – was the home of Mary Lee’s father, Dr. Ottie Bingham, rather than the home of Dr. Elijah Bingham. The Elijah Bingham home is near Henson’s Chapel off of old highway 421 and is still in good shape and occupied by the current owners. The Ottie Bingham home is right on highway 321. It still stands but is in much disrepair and abandoned.

Hi, Zachary! This image (third one on the historic buildings page) is also part of the archives of the “Historic Boone” collection, housed at Watauga County Public Library. The original does have a notation on the reverse, “ASHEVILLE POST CARD CO., ASHEVILLE, N.C.” – so it may still technically be under copyright… though it might be worthwhile to check. Unfortunately, the reverse of the card has no extant / readable publication or copyright date.
